Promiscuous Promises: Your word is your brand


pro•mis•cu•ous: demonstrating or implying an undiscriminating or unselective approach; indiscriminate or casual.

I think most of us think of something else when we see this word. In today’s topic, I refer to the second definition, as written above.

Our word is our bond. If you’re casual with it, dropping promises that you can’t fulfill, you weaken your bond. You damage your brand, whether personal or in your business.

Sometimes we promise to get in touch more often or follow up after the merchandise is delivered or installed. It may or may not happen for a number of reasons. If you aren’t sure you will do it, better not to promise.

One of the most egregious is the outright lie. Sometimes the lie is a straight up, intentional falsehood. Other times, your intentions are pure but your team isn’t delivering what you’ve promised.

Occasionally, we fool ourselves into thinking it’s a white lie, so it’s okay. But, better you should find a way to be gently truthful.

When you are casual about tossing out promises, you lessen the value of your word. You weaken your bond. You erode the brand.
